Online Safety

The Internet has become an essential part of our day-to-day living and it’s hard to imagine life without it.  How many times a day do you check your email, Facebook or Twitter?

The Internet is a great way of keeping in touch with friends and family and chatting to people with similar interests but, just like crossing the road, you have to follow the rules to stay safe.  A few minutes spent learning these rules could save you a lot of anguish later on and is time well-spent.

  • Read the poster on the right about keeping safe on social networking sites such as Facebook e safety posterFacebook.
  • Never disclose personal details like your address, phone number or where you go to school to people you have met online.
  • Never share photos with people you don’t know.
  • Visit, which is packed with interactive videos, up-to-date information and advice on what to look out for plus how to report abuse online.
  • Visit the BBC's 'Own It', full of fun stuff to help you navigate the online world safely and what to do if you experience online that you don't like.

If things do go wrong, do you know what to do?  There are plenty of understanding people you can talk to:

  • Confide in a teacher or adult that you trust.Childline Logo  0800 1111
  • Contact Childline on 0800 1111, by text on 88858, or online at  Calls and texts are free at any time, day or night and do not appear on the bill. You can contact them about any problem, whether it’s yours or a friend’s.
  • Report abuse online at - if someone is behaving in a way that makes you suspicious, asking you to do things that make Report abuseyou uncomfortable, or persistently asking to meet up, report it!
